Variety of World Peace Movement
The commemorative postage stamp “10 Years of the World Movement of Supporters of Peace” issued by the USSR on 30 May 1959 celebrates the 10th anniversary of the worldwide peace-movement organisation. The design depicts people of different nationalities united around a flag as a symbol of international solidarity and equality of peoples.
Historically, the stamp was issued in the context of the Cold War when the Soviet Union actively promoted ideas of a “world without war and nuclear weapons”, and it served as an ideological symbol of the USSR’s role in this peace movement. Moreover, the inscription on the stamp appears in eight languages: Russian, English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, German, Polish and French.
Among collectors, there are known varieties of this stamp which attract special interest. On one of them, a small dot can be seen above the word PEACE, missing in the standard version—this is considered a result of a printing peculiarity. Another variety is characterised by a blotch on the left side of the frame, which looks like an extra fragment of ink. These differences are visually minor, but valuable to specialists because they confirm the technological features of Soviet printing in the late 1950s and lend the stamp additional collectible appeal.
