The 1959 USSR stamp series “Writers of Our Motherland” includes seven issues dedicated to prominent Russian literary figures such as A. V. Koltsov, S. T. Aksakov, N. V. Gogol, A. P. Chekhov, A. N. Ostrovsky, A. S. Griboedov, and I. A. Krylov. Each stamp measures approximately 40×30 mm, features line perforation 12½, and was printed in a circulation of about 1,500,000 copies. They reflect the characteristic artistic style of the late 1950s, where portrait compositions are harmoniously combined with minimalist backgrounds.
Variants exist in color reproduction, with shades of faces and clothing appearing warmer or cooler, which affects their value among collectors. Differences in print clarity are also observed, visible in line details and portrait contours, and some stamps show slight image shifts. Used examples typically bear postmarks from 1959–1960, with value depending on their origin, while unused stamps are rarer and of particular interest to philatelists. Paper variants are less common, featuring subtle textural differences or varying thickness.
This series serves as a vivid testament to the USSR’s cultural heritage and remains popular among collectors due to its combination of artistic expressiveness and historical significance.
