In 1959 the Soviet (Post) issued a set of two postage stamps dedicated to the protection of marine fauna — specifically, to valuable fish species.
The first stamp depicts a sturgeon, one of the most ancient groups of fishes, carrying a key role in commercial fishing especially for caviar production. The design emphasizes the species’ magnitude and its connection to the country’s aquatic ecosystems.
The second stamp focuses on salmon — a high-nutrient, fatty fish long valued in cuisine and symbolic of rich marine and riverine resources. This stamp underlines the importance of preserving salmon populations in the face of increasing fishing and poaching.
From a design standpoint: the stamps use a restrained color palette and place the fish within their habitat context — water, waves, fluid movement. The typography and layout align with the late-Soviet style of nature-themed stamps.
For philatelists the set is noteworthy because it reflects a shift toward printing stamps on themes of nature conservation and rare species, making it attractive for thematic collections such as “fish”, “marine fauna”, “nature protection”.
