In 1959, the Soviet Union issued a postage stamp commemorating the 350th anniversary of the birth of the Italian physicist and mathematician Evangelista Torricelli (1608–1647). The stamp featured a portrait of Torricelli, created using photogravure, and was part of the “Birth Anniversaries” series. Torricelli is renowned for his contributions to physics and mathematics, particularly for inventing the first barometer and giving his name to the unit of pressure, the “torr.”
