Confirmed varieties of Shalom Aleichem
In 1959, the Soviet Union issued a commemorative postage stamp marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Jewish writer Shalom Aleichem (real name Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, 1859–1916).
The stamp depicts the writer’s right profile, rendered in warm brown tones that highlight his literary significance and the respect accorded to his cultural legacy.
The release of the stamp was accompanied by various cultural events: an exhibition of his works was organized in one of Moscow’s major libraries, and new editions of his collected writings were published. These efforts emphasized Shalom Aleichem’s importance in both Jewish and world literature.
From a philatelic standpoint, this issue represents a fine example of Soviet commemorative releases dedicated to major literary figures. Its design, print quality, and condition—whether mint or postmarked—determine its value for collectors today.
